Artistry and Creation
We can express creativity by crafting simple, yet aesthetically pleasing, functional objects.
What does creative expression mean?
What are some simple things that are considered aesthetically pleasing?
How do you express creativity in a product?
How do you create an aesthetically pleasing product?
Is it better to be creative or aesthetically pleasing?
In this unit we will focus on creativity. You will practice how to create novel solutions to authentic problems.
In this project you will design and make a photo frame for a picture.
To show that we can express creativity by crafting simple, yet aesthetically pleasing, functional objects by constructing a cool picture frame!
In this project you are a freelance handicraft designer. A handicraft designer creates small, hand-made products for the specific needs of a client. A freelance designer works for themselves, not a company. Hand-made products are commonly made from wood or similar materials.
The target audience is your client and the people who will view the client's photo in the frame. See details below (Client and Target Audience section).
A client has approached you, a freelance handicraft designer, with a project. They have a very special photograph that they would like to display in their house. To hold the photo, the client needs a special custom frame that matches the photo and presents it well. The client would like you to create this frame for them!
You will create a picture frame for the client's photo. The frame should be relatively simple but aesthetically pleasing, and function well as a frame for the photograph. Consider the environment the framed photo will be for. The picture frame must be aesthetically related (not necessarily matching!) to the photo it is framing. See details in the Product section below.
You must demonstrate handcraft level 1 skills (see part 3, Technical skills).
Your product must meet the client's requirements and project requirements (see part 4, Product).
You will be assessed on the MYP Design Cycle: Criterion A, Criterion B and Criterion C (see part 5, Design Cycle).
